Erich,
from Chateau Brasil is following through the
commitment he made on NYE, after the NYSS
performance, to support NYSS social
programs.
On Saturday, February 13, 2010 (the second
Saturday of February and every other
Saturday thereafter), from 2pm until 6pm,
New York Samba School is going to kick off
its "Feijoada Fundraising Event",
alternating with other famous Brazilian
dishes like Mocoto ( cow's feet stew) and
Moqueca de Peixe" (famous Bahia's fish
stew). Performances by NYSS Drum ensemble
and guests, singing the best of Rio de
Janeiro's 2010 Canival songs will keep
children and parents feeling like they are
in Rio de Janeiro's samba school parade.
In the
ocasion, NYSS will starts the "Ala das
Criancas Rehearsal". Parents are encouraged
to bring their kids and enroll them to
parade with NYSS in July.
The funds raised will go toward covering the
costs of costume making for 80 kids, and
instruments for 20 children from the
community, which will be part of the "Ala
das Criancas."
New York
Samba School is also fundraising to cover
the costs of its 501(c)3 filing fee, and
website making, totaling $1500.
Children enrolled in the NYSS programs will
be encouraged to speak Portuguese and
enhance school academic performance.
Parents
will be encouraged to become members of the
NYSS.
Do not
forget that after January 23 NYSS will start
teaching drums for kids. We are still
looking for a 5000 s/f loft or similar space
to house our programs.
The class schedule is as follow:
Saturdays
From 2 to 3 pm - children age 10 to 12
From 3 to 4 pm - Children age 13 to 15
From 4 to 5 pm - Youth 16 - 21.
New York Samba School Main Rehearsals will
start on Saturday, 1/23/2010 at 12pm until
2pm.
NYSS
partnered with NYU School of dentistry to
provide dental care for children ages 3
month old to 14 year old. Service can be
provided It can be provided on their
outreach bus or in house.
Children
who need a deeper treatment will be covered
under a grant NYU provide.
Important
names of the Brazilian community in Queens
are joining NYSS. They believe in our work
and want to be a part of the change we are
prosing to help to make: Queens Brazilian
community more visible and heard.
